A helpful reference outlining baby's cues to help you understand their needs

HUNGER

Type of cry: Long, low, repetitive, growing in intensity

Physical cues:

  • sucking on hands or tongue

  • lip smacking

  • sticking out tongue

  • turning head side to side

  • flexed body

FULLNESS

Type of cry: Not crying, unless overly full and uncomfortable

Physical cues:

  • falling asleep

  • open hands

  • turning away from breast/bottle

  • changing sucking pattern

TIRED

Type of cry: Similar to hunger

Physical cues:

  • yawning

  • rubbing eyes

  • fussy

  • pulling at ears

  • reduced interest in people/toys

  • staring into space

GASSY/GI UPSET

Type of cry: Sharp, intermittent

Physical cues:

  • squirming

  • arching back

  • grimacing

  • restless

  • fisted hands

  • crying

  • pulling off feed


Every baby is different and these are general recognizable cues. Some baby's show a combination, and others may show different signs. Always trust your instincts.
