HUNGER
Type of cry: Long, low, repetitive, growing in intensity
Physical cues:
sucking on hands or tongue
lip smacking
sticking out tongue
turning head side to side
flexed body
FULLNESS
Type of cry: Not crying, unless overly full and uncomfortable
Physical cues:
falling asleep
open hands
turning away from breast/bottle
changing sucking pattern
TIRED
Type of cry: Similar to hunger
Physical cues:
yawning
rubbing eyes
fussy
pulling at ears
reduced interest in people/toys
staring into space
GASSY/GI UPSET
Type of cry: Sharp, intermittent
Physical cues:
squirming
arching back
grimacing
restless
fisted hands
crying
pulling off feed
Every baby is different and these are general recognizable cues. Some baby's show a combination, and others may show different signs. Always trust your instincts.
